In May 1847, 13-year-old Virginia Reed detailed her family's harrowing trek from Missouri to California in a letter to her cousin.
The previous summer, the Donner and Reed families took an untested cutoff on their journey west, trapping them in the worst winter in the history of the Sierra Nevada. Of the 87 in their party, only 46 survived.
