Description

I just tried a fruit I have never had in over two decades of being raw vegan, and Dr. Douglas Graham handed it to me himself.

This is saguaro cactus fruit. It grows on the saguaro cacti of the southwestern United States deserts, drops to the ground each summer, and dries naturally in the desert heat. American Indians ate this fruit for thousands of years since it stores for a year easily and grows in massive abundance.

Doug ranks it as the best cactus fruit he has ever tried, better than dragon fruit or sabra, and easily in his top 10 all time favorite fruits. My first bite backs him up completely. Crispy, packed with tiny seeds, not overly sweet but incredibly rewarding, with a flavor that reminded me of sesame snaps. It just knocked mulberries out of my number one dried fruit spot.

Huge thanks to Dr. Douglas Graham for introducing me to this one.
