Description
This week on the Velo podcast, we skip the usual gear reviews to find out what contributor Lisa Charlebois does when she isn't evaluating bikes: an unsupported 755-mile ride through the Arctic Circle.
The Midnight Sun Randonneur is a 1,215-kilometer loop starting in Umeå, Sweden, pushing north into the Arctic Circle to the Norwegian Sea, and looping back. Because the event takes place during the Scandinavian midsummer, constant daylight completely messes with your sense of time. Lisa breaks down what it takes to tackle this ride under a 90-hour time limit, including a 292-mile first day with over 15,500 feet of climbing, and surviving 200 kilometers of freezing rain.
We also dive into the specific gear she used, long-distance fueling strategies, and why crossing the finish line of a massive ultra-endurance event is usually met with zero fanfare.
