Discover a much better version of the classic Rembrandt lighting! Learn how a Lantern modifier transforms your Rembrandt lighting by creating beautiful shadows, balanced contrast, and a perfectly lit backdrop.
In this video, I show you how I evolved the traditional Rembrandt lighting setup into something I like even more. While the classic technique creates dramatic contrast and beautiful shadows, it often leaves the backdrop darker than I’d like. By using a Lantern modifier, I can keep the iconic Rembrandt look while creating a smoother transition between the subject and the background.
You’ll also see why I still add an accent light to enhance depth and dimension, and how understanding the design of your light modifiers allows you to predict exactly how light will behave. Whether you’re shooting portraits, newborns, or still life, this simple lighting change can dramatically improve your images.

In the video, Frank talks about Caravaggio. Caravaggio is best known for being a renowned yet controversial Italian painter of the late 1500s and early 1600s.
