From old to bold, shooting an upcycle fashion collection

What happens when old garments are transformed into a brand-new fashion collection—and then brought to life in front of the camera?

In this pre-recorded Digital Classroom, Frank Doorhof takes you behind the scenes of a creative fashion shoot built around upcycled clothing: unique pieces transformed from old materials into bold, one-of-a-kind looks.

Together with model, stylist, shop owner, and sustainable fashion designer Nadine, Frank explores how to photograph an upcycle collection with impact—from choosing the right backdrop to shaping the light, directing the model, and capturing the details that make every outfit special.

You’ll see the shoot unfold in a three-way split screen: the tethered results, the wide behind-the-scenes setup, and a close-up of Frank as he explains his choices while shooting.

In this episode, you’ll discover:
• How Frank prepares for both portraits and full-body fashion shots
• Why backdrop choice matters before the first frame is taken
• How different modifiers change the mood, contrast, and background light
• Where to meter your light and why Frank relies on a light meter and color checker
• How to photograph hats, accessories, texture, and unique upcycled details
• How small changes in lens choice, posing, composition, and model coaching can completely change the final image

After the shoot, Frank takes you through the complete selection and retouching process. You’ll see all the images again as he explains which shots he keeps, which ones he leaves out, and what makes an image strong enough for the final selection. He also revisits the color checker workflow and shows how to use it as a reliable starting point before you watch him retouch the selected images step by step.

From softboxes to lanterns, Venetian blinds, grids, and reflectors. This session is packed with practical studio photography tips you can use in your own shoots.

Whether you love fashion photography, studio lighting, behind-the-scenes learning, or simply want to see how “old” clothing can become something bold and beautiful, this Digital Classroom will inspire you to look at your next shoot differently.
