Description
The law has caught up with John Marston, and he's being tasked with tracking down his former gang members if he wants to get his life back. This is the full story of the original Red Dead Redemption game, edited into a movie. This movie will look the best on an HDR display with the screen brightness maxed out, but I've custom graded this movie in both HDR and SDR, so it should look great on any device.

If you aren't familiar with my work, this isn't just a cutscene compilation like you might see elsewhere. I'm trying to take the full story and editing it into a format that feels more like a Hollywood movie. The story of a game isn't only told in cutscenes, so this includes as much gameplay as I feel like is necessary to tell that story without cutting so much that I cause plot holes. I want the story to be enjoyable whether you've played the game or not.
A big part of the reason I make these movies is to try to bring a great story to people who may not have had the opportunity to experience it before, but I've found that even if you've played the game, watching the story in this condensed form can really enhance the way I understand and appreciate the story of a game. I do cut some missions to focus on the main story. There's one major arc in particular I decided to cut because it felt like a waste of time and went against John Marston's character, and it ultimately didn't affect the story at all.
Part of my process is to try to remove as many reminders that you're watching a game as possible. I turn off as many HUD options as possible, and use cropping, editing, or VFX to remove the rest. This game didn't have much in terms of HUD options, but I was able to get rid of the rest mostly by cropping the edges during some gameplay sequences, so I didn't need much VFX work. Unfortunately, there were a couple aspects the game had a lot of that I couldn't remove: The yellow X that appears at mission destinations, as well as the aiming reticle. They just appeared too often and often in ways that would have been too difficult to remove.
For this movie, I re-framed every shot to fit a slightly more cinematic 2.00:1 aspect ratio. This helped make the cropping of certain HUD elements easier. I didn't want to go all the way to 2.35:1 like RDR2 though because the game didn't utilize as wide angle of a lens so I think it would have cropped too much. I also converted the PS5 version of the game's 60fps to a more cinematic 24fps with simulated motion blur to give it more of a film feel.
