Sir Anish Mikhail Kapoor, CBE, RA (born 12 March 1954) is an Indian British[1] sculptor specializing in installation art and conceptual art. Born in Bombay,[2][3] Kapoor has lived and worked in London since the early 1970s when he moved to study art, first at the Hornsey College of Art and later at the Chelsea School of Art and Design.
In 2014 Kapoor began working with Vantablack, a substance thought to be one of the least reflective substances known. His exclusive licence to the material has been criticized, but he has defended the agreement, saying: "Why exclusive? Because it's a collaboration, because I am wanting to push them to a certain use for it. I've collaborated with people who make things out of stainless steel for years and that's exclusive."[60]

Vantablack S-VIS, a sprayable paint which uses randomly-aligned carbon nanotubes and only has high absorption in the visible light band, also called the "blackest black" color, has been exclusively licensed to Anish Kapoor's studio for artistic use.[61] Kapoor appropriating the "blackest black" for himself has caused outrage among many artists, including Christian Furr and Stuart Semple.[62][63] In retaliation, Semple developed the "pinkest pink" color and made it available to everyone, except Anish Kapoor and anyone affiliated with him.[64][65] He later stated that the move was itself like performance art and that he did not anticipate the amount of attention it received.[66] In December 2016, Kapoor posted an Instagram post of his middle finger dipped in Semple's pink which he had acquired.[67] Semple developed more products such as "Black 2.0" and "Black 3.0", which has similar qualities to Vantablack despite being acrylic, and "Diamond Dust" which is made of glass shards and comes with a warning to not get glass shards in your fingers or hands.[68][69] Nanolab, a Waltham, Massachusetts-based carbon nanotube manufacturer, partnered with Boston artist Jason Chase to release a nanotube-based black paint called Singularity Black.[70] During the first showing of the colour, Chase, alluding to Vantablack, stated that "its possibilities have been stunted by not being available to experiment with," and Singularity Black's release was important to create access.[71]
In 2018 the National Rifle Association (NRA) was the defendant in a lawsuit brought by Kapoor, which they ultimately settled with the artist.
Dirty Corner, exhibited at the Palace of Versailles in 2015, was a topic of controversy due to its "blatantly sexual" nature. Kapoor himself reportedly described the work as "the vagina of a queen who is taking power".
Vantablack VBx2, a variant of the non-nanotube Vantablack VBx that is optimized for large area spraying, was used in a "Vantablack pavilion" at the 2018 Winter Olympics.[31]
BMW unveiled a X6 concept with Vantablack paint at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 2019; however, the company does not plan on producing the color on production models of the X6 [32]
Swiss, H. Moser & Cie have used this stealth technology in their watches.
