11/11/2018 “MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY, this is 1388....” These were the words I heard LIVE via radio as it all happened...
Unscheduled Air Astana Flight #KC1388 / KZR1388 had some maintenance issues and had been grounded (according to correspondence I had with FlightRader24 and the airlines itself), however, on this date, the aircraft was sent up (for reasons I can only speculate was to determine if its mechanical issues were worked out before placing passengers on board).
The aircraft went up (with only the pilot based again, on scant reporting) and very shortly thereafter, a Squawk 7700 was transmitted, followed by several "Mayday" calls by the pilot himself.
This is not an exaggeration of events. This harrowing flight took over 90 minutes to come to a conclusion, much of it, the pilot was at the mercy of Air Traffic Control and Portugese Air Defense to assist with KC1388's navigation (there appeared to be both mechanical and navigational issues going on simultaneously).
