Most recent US #military #aircraft to send out an #emergency squawk code was a Nuclear-capable #B52 over Fort Worth, Texas on August 10, 2021. We don’t know the nature of this particular situation, as the aircraft dropped from visible radar shortly afterwards. What we do know, from following radar scopes for several years, is that this is a relatively new phenomenon. Is it possible these aircraft have always used Squawk7700 as much as civilian aircraft do? Sure. But until recently, tracking such codes has been a daunting task. With newer tracking methods available it’s possible we can simply enjoy greater visibility into the squawk codes military aircraft are using. However, that doesn’t provide a great deal of comfort, as some of the codes are coming from aircraft one would hope would never find itself in any emergency situation. Particularly on a non-severe weather flight deck.
