A major hospital alliance DELIBERATELY misrepresented opioid research to justify restrictive pain management policies!
And it turns out, they're backed by a pharmaceutical company pushing non-opioid alternatives.
In this video, I examine claims made during WellLink Health Alliance's "NEO Opioid Education Series: The Future of Pain Management: Cutting-Edge, Non-Opioid Solutions," a presentation supported by CDC funding (YOUR tax dollars!) and featuring a representative from Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the maker of the non-opioid pain medication Journavx (suzetrigine).
Their representative made the assertion that 83% of people who transitioned to heroin or fentanyl "started with medically prescribed opioids."
Problem: THE PAPER SAYS NO SUCH THING!!!
I walk through the actual published paper, explain how the participants were selected, compare the numbers presented in the webinar with the data reported by the researchers, and discuss why those distinctions matter.
Why have reductions in opioid prescribing not produced corresponding reductions in overall overdose deaths?
Why is the role of illicit fentanyl being ignored?
Why does no one want to consider the broader impact of restrictive opioid policies on chronic pain patients, including forced tapers, denial of treatment, pharmacy refusals, and access to adequate pain care?
What the hell happened to that oath doctors are supposed to swear???
