One person has died after shooting at downtown Cincinnati club

LOCAL 12 Video 2 days ago

Description

Police say one man is dead after a shooting at Memories Lounge in downtown Cincinnati early Sunday morning.

Investigators say officers were called to the 30 block of E. Seventh Street for reports of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police identified the man as 20-year-old Kameiro Blair Martin. He was taken to UC Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Memories Lounge owner Dre Kirkpatrick released a comment on the shooting Sunday:

"We are heartbroken and devastated by this incident and we are still in the process of gathering information as to what occurred last night. It would be premature to give a statement on the matter at this time. Our condolences go out to the victim's family and loved ones."
Cincinnati City Council Member Scotty Johnson called the shooting very disturbing.

"We had a horrible, unfortunate incident last night, and those that own Memories are going to have to be accountable for that behavior," said Johnson.

Johnson also commented on Martin being underage and in the 21-and-up establishment.

"It's a huge red flag to think about two things here: Liquor establishments, you're not allowed to have a firearm inside of there; that's a big red flag. And then the fact that we had somebody underage inside of that, and that is a red flag," he said.

Earlier this year, a group of council members tried to pass ordinances aimed at addressing nuisance businesses, including bars and nightclubs, after determining the city had no way to regulate commercial enterprises beyond trying to revoke liquor licenses. Since then, the proposal has sparked major protests and was placed on hold after owners, including Kirkpatrick, pushed back, raising questions about how the rules would be used.

Council Member Seth Walsh co-sponsored the proposed ordinance this summer and says it's still being discussed by council.

Johnson, who chairs the City Council’s Public Safety Committee, believes the proposed crackdown on nuisance bars that was once tabled will now be fast-tracked after the shooting at Memories Lounge.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cincinnati Police Department's Homicide Unit at 513-352-3542.
