In this week’s video we explore something very unusual Hidden in a Dorset forest!
The Royal Naval Cordite Factory (RNCF) at Holton Heath, was a crucial WWI and WWII facility between (1916–1945) producing cordite propellant for the Royal Navy.
The site covered almost 500 acres, it was a secret, self-sufficient base with its own rolling stock, acid manufacturing, and a 5-mile internal railway network with a fleet of locomotives.! As you can imagine it also had very high security!
After 1945, it became the Admiralty Materials Laboratory, later part of the Defence Research Agency, before finally closing in the late 1990s.
Hidden underground on the site is a massive, 3.5-million-gallon water storage reservoir, built during World War 1… It supplied critical cooling water for the production of the cordite propellant and was later roofed in 1934 to prevent contamination.
