Our resident classic and exotic car expert Nicholas Maronese returns for Trivia Tuesday to unpack one of the most bizarre, over-engineered recalls in automotive history: the Aston Martin Valkyrie rear-brake fire hazard.

Yes, the Valkyrie had a recall because its rear brakes could drag, overheat, and literally ignite the carbon-fiber cooling ducts. But as Nick explains, you can't actually trigger this on a public road. To get the brakes to catch fire, you have to execute a highly complex sequence of variables simultaneously on a racetrack:

🏎️ The Setup: Your Valkyrie must be fitted with the optional track suspension pack, and the traction control must be set to ESP Sport, ESP Track, or completely off.
📐 The Slide: You have to slide the car sideways into an aggressive oversteer drift, exceeding a highly specific yaw rate and body slip angle.
🔄 The Counter-Steer: As you counter-steer against the drift, the ESP must actively intervene to brake the front inside wheel to stabilize the car.
🛞 The Throttle Trap: At the exact same moment, you must be back on the throttle, forcing the ESP to also brake the rear inside wheel to act as a virtual limited-slip differential.
🛑 The Final Trigger: While the ESP is actively manipulating fluid to those individual wheels, you must simultaneously stomp hard on the brake pedal.

Why does this happen? The Valkyrie's braking system was originally designed for raw mechanical track performance with zero electronic stability control in mind. When stability control was added later, the master cylinder seals simply weren't designed to handle the driver and the computer pushing fluid back and forth at the same time. The fluid gets trapped, the brakes drag, they spike in heat, and the carbon resin catches fire.
