Driving a 1974 Bricklin SV-1—is it as bad as they say? |Driving.ca

#classiccar #BricklinSV1 #Canadiancars

There's no other way to put it: the Bricklin SV-1 is widely regarded as a failure. The company had planned to sell some 12,000 SV-1 sports cars during the very first year of production; and projected that by year three, over 50,000 would be produced. In the end, just 2,906 were made across three chaotic years, from 1974 to 1976. The car’s namesake, Malcolm Bricklin, had convinced New Brunswick premier Richard Hatfield to invest millions of dollars of capital towards the venture. In the end, the money went missing, the factories never reached anything close to capacity, and the SV-1 became an ignoble footnote in automotive history.

A new documentary series recently released on Bell Fibe, "Bricklin: The Gullwing Gamble" – produced in New Brunswick by Cazador in collaboration with Postmedia Studios – takes that footnote and explores it in great depth, cataloguing the rise and fall of the Bricklin SV-1. The doc dives deep into the history of the entire fiasco, and features exclusive interviews with historians, automotive experts, and Malcolm Bricklin himself. But there's a somewhat more pointed question I want answered: was the failure of the SV-1 the fault of the car itself?

We answer the question fully in the feature article on Driving.ca: https://driving.ca/vehicle-types/classic-cars-amp-trucks/bricklin-sv-1-gullwing-gamble-canada-sports-car-failure ____________________________________
