New leishmaniasis vaccine offers hope against parasitic disease | Ohio State Medical Center

Description

A vaccine developed at The Ohio State University may be the breakthrough the world needs to prevent leishmaniasis, a disease that can become deadly and has become endemic in more regions, including in the United States.

Abhay Satoskar, MD, PhD, is part of a team of Ohio State researchers who've used CRISPR gene-editing technology to create a safer vaccine that can train the immune system without causing disease. In animal studies, the vaccine was 100% effective.

More than 10% of the world is at risk of contracting the disease, he says, which is caused by tiny parasites spread through sand fly bites. Leishmaniasis was predominantly found in tropical regions (Africa, the Middle East and South American) until recently, due to deforestation and climate change.
