Description

Journey to Doksa
.
Every summer the people of Zanskar move all the cattle out of their villages. This is done to prevent the animals from destroying the crops in their fields.
.
The animals are taken to camps deep inside the mountain valleys. These camps are called the Doksas.
.
The villagers take turns to go live in the Doksa to take care of the animals. They also collect milk from the Dimos and make butter and cheese with the collected milk.
.
This has been the way of life in these mountains for millennia. But it is slowly changing as the people have jobs and businesses now, and do not have time to take care of the animals. Only the old people in the villages have time to look after the animals and this way of life would mostly end with their generation.
