Namaste everyone,
When people talk about powerful female songs in musical theatre, Broadway and the West End usually dominate the conversation — soaring orchestrations, emotionally charged lyrics, and voices that don’t just sing, but take over the stage. Over time, this belt-heavy, high-impact vocal style has become the default image of what a “powerful” musical theatre voice sounds like.
But musical theatre is far more global than those few major hubs.
While working on this video, I spent time exploring productions from different parts of the world and curated a compilation of some of the most striking, emotionally intense, and vocally commanding female songs from global musical theatre — all united by that unmistakable Broadway-like intensity, even when sung in different languages and cultural contexts.
For this compilation, I deliberately chose not to include operas or classical theatre pieces. Not because they lack power — quite the opposite — but because they are so vast and rich that they deserve an entire video of their own. Instead, I focused on modern musical theatre numbers that lean into bold belting or vocal riffs, theatrical confrontation, and that very “in your face” emotional delivery often associated with contemporary Broadway and West End productions.
The songs featured in this video include memorable and powerful female performances from productions such as: -
I Can’t Sing! (2014) – I Can’t Sing - @CynthiaErivo
Rama Hari (1980) – Magbalik Ka Na Mahal - @GabPangilinanOfficial
La Cantata [ラ・カンタータ!] (1994) – Bolero of Passionate Love (熱愛のボレロ) - Shion Yuu
Kid Manoir: La potion interdite (2008) – La Potion de Gisèle - @AnaDelva
Ash'shakhs [الشخص] (1968) – Bokra Enta We Gai (بكره انت وجاي ) - Ronza
Wicked (2003) – Defying Gravity - @willemijnverkaik2686
No Longer Human [人间失格] (2021) – Tianzhen Zui (天真罪) - Weiling Li
Elisabeth (1992) – Ich gehör nur mir - Pia Douwes
Ekach Pyala [एकच प्याला] (1919) – Kashi Ya Tyaju Padala (कशी या त्यजु पदाला) - @Sampada_Mane
Chai Klang The Musical [ชายกลางเดอะมิวสิคัล] (2019) - Pleumchit (ปลื้มจิต) - Pattreeya Payom
Hanoman – Ada Apa Dengan Shinta (2023) – Shinta’s Lament -@okvalicahn6035
Across different languages, theatrical traditions, and storytelling styles, these songs capture moments where female characters assert identity, defy circumstances, or emotionally dominate the stage through sheer vocal and dramatic force.
I hope this compilation introduces you to new performers, new theatrical traditions, and perhaps even new ways of listening to global musical storytelling.
Let me know which song resonated with you the most — and which of these global musical theatre works you think deserves far more international attention.
