Missing out note number 4

John Browne Short 3 days ago

Description

In this Rhythm exercise from the library, we’re exploring rests by leaving out note 4 in the sequence. We’ll work through the phrase, then cycle the rest through each note.

It’s a great way to feel how a missing beat changes the groove—and bring fresh ideas into your own riffs.

In eighth notes, the pattern feels like 3, then 7, then 7, then 7, crossing over the bar line. Try it with odd groupings, too: playing 7/8 over 4/4 and resting on note 4 can create a really cool vibe.
