Singer-songwriter Mike Campbell talks about playing rock songs arranged for orchestra

“I’ve always loved classical music,” Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Dirty Knobs) says in this interview with The Current’s Zach McCormick. Over the course of his career, Campbell has written so many songs, but there was an idea that continued to linger in his mind. “I thought how cool it would be to hear [the songs] performed by a full orchestra,” Campbell says, “and it was just kind of a fantasy.”
Now that fantasy will be coming true. On Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, Campbell will perform with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in a concert featuring music arranged specially for the performance, including songs co-written by Campbell and Petty, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks and others. The concert will take place at the Atlanta Symphony Hall; ASO Resident Conductor William R. Langley will conduct.
