Description

Medicine Balls have been around for centuries. According to Thomas (2002), although the medicine ball may date back to the ancient Egyptians, the Greek physician Claudius Galen (ca. AD 130-200) is thought to be the first to prescribe the use of balls for therapeutic purposes. In the 16th century Girolamo Mercuriale promoted the use of light balls filled with air or feathers and heavy balls filled with sand to prevent and heal illness. The medicine ball was also used by the United States Military Academy in the late 1800s and early 1900s and by the United Sates Army as a reconditioning tool during World War II.

Medicine balls are not only an extremely versatile training tool but are also relatively inexpensive when compared with other forms of traditional gym equipment. They come in various weights, sizes, ad types, allowing the use of a wide variety of training styles and the development of various physical attributes. Any local sporting goods store will offer traditional leather-bound balls, sand-filled medicine balls, rubberized medicine balls designed to bounce, and even balls with handles- Furthermore, you can make your own medicine ball by simply taking an old basketball or soccer ball and adding water. In addition to versatility, medicine balls have one major benefit not available with other training devices: They can be released and thrown! This attribute allows users to accelerate the ball throughout the entire range of motion, which maximizes the amount of power that they can generate. This occurs because the muscles responsible for decelerating the weight are not activated during the end range of the movement to slow down the implement (Cissik & Dawes, 2015).
