Editor's note: The below interview contains spoilers for the premiere of Lucky.
From the first minute of Apple TV's new crime thriller Lucky, you know you're in for a wild ride — and that's even before getting to the literal car crash that caps off the first episode. Yet what you likely don't know is the surprising link that Anya Taylor-Joy had to the story even before it was adapted into a TV show, when author Marissa Stapley was apparently picturing the actress in her head all along while crafting the tale of a confidence woman and grifter trying to stay one step ahead of the law.
While Apple TV's adaptation, created by Jonathan Tropper (Your Friends & Neighbors) and Cassie Pappas, makes a few pivots from the original novel, at its core, it's about a young woman who wakes up to find herself betrayed by her new husband (played by Drew Starkey) and left on the hook for the millions of dollars they've just stolen together. With both the FBI and the mob on her tail, Luciana Armstrong ("Lucky" for short) is forced to go on the run, and if the show's first two episodes are any indication, things are not going to be easy for her.
Ahead of Lucky's premiere on Apple TV, Collider spoke with Taylor-Joy and Starkey about some of their characters' most pivotal scenes early on, including Cary's heartbreaking betrayal, pulling off that intense "human rotisserie" crash stunt, why Lucky is a change of pace from any of Taylor-Joy's previous action roles, and more.
