Tim O’Reilly’s fine-tuning run failed in part because he didn’t understand what made a useful training set. In this excerpt from his conversation with O'Reilly CTO Andrew Odewahn, Tim compares that attempt with a later session using an O’Reilly tutor tool in development. The tutor pointed him to a short guide that helped him see why he’d chosen the wrong documents. Tim connects the experience to a broader concern about deskilling: People need to keep learning alongside their AI tools so they can understand and guide the work.
