Here's a piece I've played for years — Ravel's La Valse — and every time my hands are on it, I see something: a ballroom, gold light, a waltz turning and turning until it becomes its own undoing. I've never been able to show anyone what I see when I play it. It lived in my head and nowhere else.
This summer I tried to get it out.
I'm a pianist, not a visual artist, so I used ChatGPT to sketch it. It took 130 images to get close to 3 minutes of La Valse. What you're seeing isn't a finished artwork. It's the first time the story in my head has existed outside of it - rough, imperfect, more transcript than vision, and now I am looking to do more.
But the thing I've always loved isn't concept art. It's storyboards. I grew up watching the magic of storyboard artists — especially the way Disney artists can make a sequence feel alive with nothing more than a few lines and a sense of motion. Frame by frame, they turn images into a story, rhythm, and emotion.
These sketches got me far enough to finally see the shape of what I've been imagining. Now I'm ready for a real storyboard artist to take it somewhere I can't. I want a co-author with craft, taste, and a point of view of their own.
