Iconic Character Replacements!
Starting off we have Mickey Mouse: Disney’s studio produced Oswald cartoons for Universal, but Walt Disney did not own the character. Disney’s own historical account explicitly says that, after losing Oswald, Walt “he had to come up with a new character,” which became Mickey.
From Mr.TV to Mr.Video Game, next is Jump Man Mario, Donkey Kong, and Pauline. Nintendo was originally trying to make a Popeye Game with the same mechanics of Bluto throwing barrels down a stage. This became legally impractical, so Nintendo was forced to create original characters instead.
Then we have Lola Bunny Replacing Honey Bunny. For anyone who’s a fan of the old Warner Bros Comics, Honey Bunny was Bugs Bunny’s original love interest, and she was going to be in Space Jam, but Space Jam marketers feared Honey Bunny looked too similar to Bugs and didn’t have well I don’t want to say it out loud. So they replaced her with a new character named Lola.
Moving on is Joe Replacing Steve From Blue’s Clue, After Steve made the personal decision to move on from the show, the producers did not hire another actor to pretend to be Steve. They created Steve’s younger brother Joe, played by Donovan Patton, and constructed an on-screen handoff in which Steve left for college.
And Lastly, in Transformers Armada, Hot Shot was originally intended to be Bumblebee, but the name was ultimately changed due to trademark restrictions. Instead of re-changing the name once Hasbro got the trademark back, they decided to keep Hot Shot as his own Character.
