A bit of hype in the title, but not without a lot of truth. Fortunately I started on YouTube when I was older and gained enough success for it to have been worth the time and effort I put into it. I made enough over that time to live comfortably (for me) and put aside enough for retirement (I hope).
That's why I said (and this is especially true if you are young) that it's better to build a more traditional business putting the lions share of the effort and time into that, and build a social media presence to promote it. You can build a future where you can actually let someone else take over and you can retire if you want to.
Truth is that eventually you will get sick of the grind, and that's doubly so if you are doing all of the work yourself. And even though you've worked for years to build something, it may not be worth much in real terms.
