I built an open-top paludarium inspired by ancient dinosaur ecosystems, featuring a giant fossil skull sitting half submerged between land and water. This build combines a planted terrarium and aquatic ecosystem into one living biome using dragon stone, lava rock, ferns, begonias, aquarium hardscape, and layered bioactive substrate.
A paludarium is a hybrid ecosystem that combines both terrestrial and aquatic environments — creating a realistic slice of nature inside glass.
For this prehistoric-inspired build, I used:
• Horticultural gravel
• Activated charcoal
• Wisconsin peat moss
• Lava rock
• Custom soil mix
• Dragon stone hardscape
• Red and green tropical plants
• Ancient fern species
• Aquatic section with natural rockscape
The centerpiece is a dinosaur fossil skull designed to look like it’s been reclaimed by nature over millions of years.
