Choosing a good moment to pull onions. We want them fully grown, but not lingering more than necessary. That gives them more time to ripen, dry well for storage, and there is more time to plant succession vegetables.
All these are grown from seed, and were multi-sown, at the same time in late February. Then transplanted late March, with fleece over. Although they were all planted at the same time, each variety matures at its own pace. In this video I show how to recognise when onions are ready to harvest, along with the best way to lay them out for drying.
These three are Rose de Roscoff / Keravel, Red Baron and Long Red Florence.
