Dragging a clip into your Premiere Pro timeline normally overwrites whatever is underneath — not what you want when you're inserting a new shot mid-edit. The fix is one modifier key. Hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) as you drag from the source monitor or media browser into the timeline. Premiere shows an insertion line instead of an overwrite preview, and when you release, the rest of the timeline ripples forward to make room. The trick works on video clips, audio clips, and any combination of stacked tracks — sound effects, music, and dialogue all shift together.

Works in Premiere Pro 2024, 2025, and 2026
