How I prepare for a one-off gig : learning songs fast, what gear to use, building a MainStage live rig, and being ready to change things on the spot (like changing a song's key).

I was hired to play with a drum corps and a live band at their annual live concert, with limited time to learn a lot of songs. In this video I walk through how I prepare, from the mindset to the technical setup.

I decided to run everything from MainStage. It meant a cleaner setup, more flexibility, and less gear to haul. But the corps and the audience didn't care what I used. The audience wanted a good time, and the corps wanted the sounds and my playing. How I got there was my job.

MainStage is a live performance music application developed by Apple for macOS that turns a Mac computer into a customizable virtual instrument rig, effects processor, and backing-track player. Hook up a keyboard master controller and you're set.

I can't show you live footage from the gig itself as I don't have the rights to do so.

What's covered:
- Planning and preparing when time is short
- How I learn songs quickly
- Setting up MainStage: sounds, mapping and mixing
- Clips from the sound check
- Why a positive attitude, A-game playing, being well prepared, and being ready to change things quickly are what get you hired again
