In 1993 I bought the Ensoniq DP/4 effects unit for my studio. It was brand new at that time and Ensoniq was riding high on their pedigree of synths, sampler workstations and loyal customers.
The DP/4 had a lot going for it. Four independent DSP effects engines in one box, rather than one big processor running a fixed chain. With very flexible routing almost everything could be achieved with that box and for my small, but well equipped studio at the time this meant I could cater for almost anything a client might ask for. Reverb, delays, chorus, guitar amps and even vocoding was possible.
It had a distinctive lush, slightly gritty sound that people still like.
Later, in 1995 they released a DP/4+ which I also got.
Finally, in 1997 they went after the big boys (Lexicon, TC, Eventide etc) with their DP/Pro. This had the most luxurious reverb algorithms, but at that time Ensoniq was facing death and everything fizzled out.
Over the years these Ensoniq effects have gained a cult following. Mostly because they still have a lot to give and also because of their (mostly the DP/4) slightly grainy, yet lush sound.
