Have you ever wondered what artists use to create texture on their canvases? In todays video I am going to be sharing with you what supplies to buy to texture your canvases for acrylics.
The medium I use is called Wallboard Joint Compound by DAP. You can find this in Home Depot or Lowes. The reason why I buy this instead of what is sold in craft stores is because I don't appreciate being bent over and ripped off for an item that does the exact same thing. Especially considering the amount you need for texturing larger canvases.
As I share in this video, I prefer using cheap plastic palette knifes. They not only do the trick, but the fancier palette knifes freak me out. Just thinking about how those metal, or whatever they are, pallets knifes feel like touching the canvas gives me the ick. I know, I'm weird okay.
Make sure to let the canvas texture dry before you go crazy with your acrylics. It's going to take probably 24 hours, but 12 for medium dryness. If you are impatient like me, you can start painting on it a few hours in, but it may end up moving around which is no fun.
When it comes to correcting the cracks on the canvas, don't be a freak. Just go back with a small brush and smooth over them with the joint compound. Or, don't. You really don't have to.
To seal your acrylic paintings you can choose to put a varnish over it. Again, you don't have to but it can be nice. You can use a high gloss, satin or matte finish depending on your feelings.
