When Home Alone released in 1990, the film absolutely obliterated the box office. It becomes the highest-grossing film of 1990 in the U.S., and every kid suddenly wants to be Kevin McCallister—with way less parental neglect, hopefully.
Publishers smell money. This is peak “slap a movie logo on anything that boots up” era. THQ—back when it literally stood for Toy Headquarters—is scrambling to grab licenses. One of the games they end up publishing is Home Alone for the NES.
But what we got instead is one of the most chaotic survival style licensed games of the early ’90s — and believe it or not, it’s hiding some genuinely interesting secrets, scrapped ideas, developer quirks, and glitches that make this game way more than it looks on the surface.
And then you learn there’s a glitch that lets you freeze the Wet Bandits in place and basically go enjoy a lovely cheese pizza just for yourself while the timer runs down.
Yeah. This is Home Alone… on the NES and it was actually one of Bethesda Softworks early developments as part of the studio’s “scrappy young years” before they reinvented themselves as the powerhouse behind The Elder Scrolls.
