Description
The second riff from I, The Creator isn't technically the hardest in the song… but it's one of the most expressive.
-
The riff uses a fret-hand slap to create a completely different timbre to a traditional palm mute.
Combine that with moving the position of your picking hand, closer to or further away from the bridge, and you unlock a whole range of different palm mute textures.
-
The result?
A riff with only one or two notes can suddenly feel alive, creating a rhythmic ebb and flow through nothing more than changes in attack and tone.
Sometimes the biggest improvements don't come from adding more notes, they come from making the notes you already play more expressive.
-
Have you ever experimented with moving your picking hand to change the character of your palm mutes?
Inside Modern Metal Academy, we break down techniques like this in detail, complete with play-along tabs, multi-stem backing tracks so you can play to your own mix, with full video lessons.
