Get the Lead Out Lead Service Lines the 2034 Deadline and What to Do Now
There is a pipe most homeowners never think about. It is not under the sink. It is the buried service line from the water main to your meter. In millions of American homes, that pipe is still lead.
Get the Lead Out is a documentary briefing for homeowners, renters, plumbers, utility workers, and city officials on the national lead service line crisis, the EPA Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI), the money on the table, the cities moving fast, the cities falling behind, and the trenchless methods that can pull the old pipe without tearing up every driveway.
There is no safe level of lead in drinking water. That is the position of the EPA, the CDC, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Lead is a neurotoxin. In children it lowers IQ, damages attention, and is linked to lifelong behavioral harm. In adults it raises blood pressure, harms kidneys, and is associated with cardiovascular disease. When a lead service line is present, it is the largest source of lead at the tap — larger than the faucet, larger than old solder.
This video walks the full story:
• Why cities specified lead for more than a century, and why those same pipes are still in the ground

If your house was built before the 1986 federal lead ban, assume nothing. The ban stopped most new lead pipe and solder. It did not remove the line already in the dirt. Look up your water system’s public service line inventory. The listing will be some version of lead, galvanized requiring replacement, non-lead, or unknown. Unknown is not a clean bill of health.
Ask three questions in writing: Who pays for the public side? Who pays for the private side? What is the schedule for my block?
The federal government has done the part it can do on paper. It lowered the action level. It banned most partials. It put historic dollars into the revolving funds. It told systems to count the pipes and then pull them. The rest is local: a city that bids by the block, a utility that will cover the house side, a plumber who will not leave lead on the private side and call it done, and a parent who asks the only question that finishes the job.
When is this line coming out?
This video is an educational briefing on plumbing, policy, and public health. It is not medical advice, legal advice, or a substitute for your utility’s official inventory and replacement plan. Blood lead questions belong with a clinician. Replacement rules, access, and cost-share belong with your water system and state drinking water program.
Look up your address. Save the emails. Filter in the meantime. Do not wait for a taste that will never come.
