From South Africa’s coastline to the heart of Atlanta, Georgia Aquarium is proud to support the incredible rescue and rehabilitation work of SANCCOB, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds.
Follow the story of African penguins and the dedicated teams working to protect them from the many threats they face in the wild. Every year, SANCCOB rescues penguins and other seabirds suffering from emaciation, oiling, predation, injury, abandonment, dehydration, disease, and environmental challenges that leave eggs and chicks vulnerable before they ever have a chance to survive on their own.
Since 2009, Georgia Aquarium and SANCCOB have partnered to advance penguin conservation through rehabilitation, scientific research, preparedness and response efforts, education, and advocacy. Together, they work to better understand the challenges impacting wild penguin populations while improving rescue and rehabilitation techniques that give these birds a second chance.
SANCCOB’s work includes:
• 24/7 rescue and rehabilitation for sick, injured, abandoned, and oiled seabirds
• Emergency response during oil spill events
• Chick-rearing programs for abandoned eggs and chicks
• Research focused on seabird health and conservation
• Preparedness and response planning to address future threats
• Education and advocacy programs that inspire conservation action
African penguins are now critically endangered, making partnerships like this more important than ever.
