https://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/old_homes/index.html - Did you know the average American home has doubled in size over the last century, while the number of people living inside has actually shrunk?
In this video, we track the incredible evolution of the single-family detached house from the early 1900s all the way to the 2020s. Using historical data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the HUD Survey of Construction, we break down exactly how square footage and household sizes have shifted decade by decade.
Watch to see how we went from compact 950-square-foot Craftsman homes housing five people, to sprawling 2,400-square-foot modern homes built for fewer than three!
Let me know in the comments: What decade was your home built in, and how does its layout compare to these historical averages?
