Description
https://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/stairs/index.html - Welcome to this double-feature video! Today, we are combining two essential stair-building topics to help you build safer, smarter, and more efficient stairways.
Part 1: The Danger of Oversized Stair Stringer Hangers
In the first half of the video, we tackle a trend popping up on the internet: using oversized joist hangers to connect stair stringers to a ledger or upper landing. While it might seem like a heavy-duty hanger is an upgrade from traditional toenailing, cutting two or three inches out of the bottom of your stringer to make it fit can actually create an incredibly weak connection. I’ll explain why standard toenailing or using a standard-sized hanger is usually the safer, better option for un-notched stringers under ten feet.
Part 2: Second-Story Addition Stairway Framing Tour
In the second half of the video, we switch gears and walk through a custom stairway I framed for a single-story to two-story home addition. We cover the entire layout, from the front door entry into the dining room, all the way up to the second-story cantilevered landing.
Highlights from the Framing Tour include:
How to frame the floor and double joists to support the landing.
A framing trick using angled 2x4s to leave an inch-and-a-half gap, allowing you to slide in your drywall and skirt board without having to notch around every single step!
Integrating the stairs with a garage ceiling, including fireblocks and 2-hour drywall firewalls.
Tips for using the rim joist as a riser and setting back the framing correctly.
Why centrally locating your stairway is the secret to reducing foot traffic travel times in your floor plan.
