On June 29, 1956, Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller witnessed the aftermath of a horrific car accident near Miller’s home in Roxbury, Connecticut.
The couple were preparing to meet the press at Miller’s farmhouse amid intense media attention surrounding their upcoming wedding. Journalist Mara Scherbatoff, who worked for the French magazine Paris Match, was travelling with a photographer and a driver when their car crashed into a tree while following the couple’s vehicle.
Monroe and Miller stopped at the scene. Scherbatoff was seriously injured and later died in hospital. Despite the tragedy, the scheduled press conference went ahead that day.
Later that evening, Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller married in a civil ceremony, making this date a particularly memorable and tragic moment in their story.
