Description
I wanted to share a video with you showing my first days with our newest project bird, Alita.
Alita is a 5 year old Blue-Headed Macaw who came to us from another rescue after her owner unexpectedly passed away. Eleanor was able to pick her up for me and has been weighing her consistently while we were away, so when we finally got home, this was our first chance to meet in person.
Normally, I would begin working with a new project bird right away — but our rehearsal schedule completely changed those plans. Because of that, this video covers the first several days since our training sessions were a bit shorter than usual.
In it you’ll see our first interactions, then the first time I brought her into the house to work with me, and finally handling and getting her used to me, while working toward weighing her in a way that doesn’t involve her flying all over the place in the process. You’ll also hear some conversing between Dave and I about Alita not being very comfortable with him. Alita has never been around men before so right now Dave is not able to handle her at all, and when he comes within a few feet, she becomes obviously uncomfortable. However, I was really impressed with how willing she was with me and how good she was at flying around inside.
I hope you will follow along on this new journey with Alita!
