Although she's not an actress who comes to mind when you think of film noir, Deanna Durbin (December 4, 1921 – April 17, 2013), made two movies in the genre, both centered around a Christmas theme. The first, "Christmas Holiday" (1944), directed by Robert Siodmak, was loosely based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham and was her first and only dramatic role. It also featured one of Gene Kelly's earliest performances, and he was notably cast against type. While Durbin argued with the director over the presentation of her character, she later stated that this was her favorite of all her films. The following year, she appeared in the comedy/mystery/noir "Lady On A Train" (1945) directed by her future husband, Charles David. It's a fun mystery with noir touches and of course, with some musical numbers. It also boasts a fine supporting cast, including familiar faces in the noir genre - Dan Duryea and Patricia Morison. "Spring Will Be A Little This Year", performed by Deanna, is from "Christmas Holiday", the second is "Shady Business" by Fesliyan Studios.
