Let's tear down a cheap automatic plant watering system to see why it's a poor design. We walk through how this popular soil moisture sensor (exposed copper traces on a PCB) fails from electrolysis and corrosion. It's short-lived and potentially unsafe for edible plants due to lead and copper contamination. Then we will demo it and show that the “off” state wastes power, how current and wet soil accelerates material degradation, and why powering a pump from a small battery pack is fundamentally is bad from an energy and cost standpoint. I also show a DIY alternative sensor using stainless steel electrodes and epoxy insulation, and discuss better design approaches such as AC sensing, low-power control strategies, and proper materials selection.
