The mashup movement gained its momentum in 2001 with the release of the 2 Many DJ's album As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2 by Soulwax's Dewaele brothers, which combined 45 different tracks; the same year a remix of Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" was also released by The Freelance Hellraiser, which coupled Aguilera's vocals with the guitar track of "Hard to Explain" by New York's the Strokes, in a piece called "A Stroke of Genius".
However this emergence in 2001-2002 ignores a series of nightclub oriented mashups using the same existing acapella over existing instrumental that was its basic template that date back to the early 90's. Clubgoer's were well acquainted with mashups during this period as were the popular dj's who dropped them in mixes. Most of these were bootleg releases on white labels before sites like homeofmusic (in 99-2001) began providing them freely on the internet, while several became official releases. This is the story of this often underexamined part of the mashup history.
