I recently spoke at the launch of Is This the Time for the Indian Elephant & the Chinese Dragon to Dance Together?, edited by Ambassador Surendra Kumar.
Drawing on my own contribution to the volume, “The Return of Chindia”, I reflect on the cautious thaw in India-China relations, the shift from confrontation back to conversation, and the historical ties between two ancient civilisations. I also examine the realities that continue to constrain the relationship, from the unresolved border and trade asymmetries to strategic mistrust, and ask what it would truly take for the Indian elephant and Chinese dragon to “dance together”.
The real test, I argue, lies not in the symbolism of summits, but in the substance of sustained cooperation.
