https://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/codes/stair/index.html - Do stair building codes contradict each other when it comes to tread slope and riser variation? In this video, I answer a great viewer question about two specific building codes: the requirement for uniform stair risers (maximum 3/8-inch variation) and the allowance for sloping stair treads to drain water.
While most indoor residential stairs are built perfectly level with uniform dimensions, outdoor stairs or deck steps often need a slight slope to prevent water from pooling. We dive into the maximum allowed slope 1/4 inch per foot (or 1 unit of vertical rise to 48 units of horizontal length) and demonstrate how you can slope treads in multiple directions without violating the uniformity code. I also explain why the only real conflict you might run into is at the top or bottom of a sloped connecting surface like a driveway.
Have you run into issues sloping stairs, or do you have a better explanation for how these codes interact? Let us know down in the comments!
