In this lesson, I’ll show you how to use a Django-style diminished arpeggio to get that exciting Gypsy Jazz sound over dominant 7th chords.
Diminished harmony can feel intimidating at first, but the basic rule is simple:
If you’re playing over a dominant 7th chord, go up one fret and play diminished.
So over E7, you can use F diminished.
That diminished sound gives you all that classic Gypsy Jazz tension.
In this video lesson, I’ll show you:
• how diminished harmony works in Gypsy Jazz
• the simple one-fret-above rule
• how to use diminished over E7, A7, and D7
• why diminished shapes move every three frets
• how to build the chord before playing fancy arpeggios
• a Django-style diminished lick with glissando
• how this sound works inside 'Sweet Georgia Brown'
The free PDF includes the TAB for the diminished arpeggio/lick from the lesson so you can practice it slowly and get it under your fingers.
If you want to go deeper, this lesson connects directly to my '3 Arpeggio Etudes ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’' masterclass inside The Gypsy Jazz Club. That’s where I help you apply arpeggios to a real tune so they start sounding like music instead of exercises.
