Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, Episode 2.
What does a midlife crisis look like for a serial killer? Well, if you’re Dexter Morgan, it involves listening to self-help podcasts and questioning your life’s work after nobody really appreciates all the people you’ve killed. And that’s the biggest pickle in Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, which finds Michael C. Hall’s antihero at a rather strange crossroads. He’s getting older, his son is a cop, and even the ghost of his dead father Harry (James Remar) thinks he’s lost his way. But as Episode 2’s “Young Blood” underscores, Dexter’s biggest problem might be his growing need for a little recognition.
In an exclusive interview with Collider, Hall reveals that Dexter is beginning to question his legacy: “He’s really wondering what it’s all worth, if it’s his secret, and the fact of his secret dies with every victim.” It's a dangerous shift for someone who’s spent most of his life trying to stay out of law enforcement’s spotlight, especially when he encounters Brian Cox’s Don Framt, the suspected New York Ripper, who seems to enjoy every bit of attention he gets.
Cox, meanwhile, explains how Don has no such reservations about his reputation. “He basks in the glory that maybe he is a serial killer, even though he knows he is a serial killer, but he basks in that glory. So he gets off on that.” It’s a rather unsettling contrast between two killers who have spent years getting away with murder, especially now that Dexter is starting to wonder whether keeping everything a secret is really worth it.
And as if Dexter didn’t have enough on his plate, Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) is back, looking for answers about Angel Batista’s (David Zayas) death. Speaking with Collider, Hall and Cox, with Harrington, Remar, and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, opened up about Dexter’s changing priorities, the people complicating his life, and why his latest choices (like collaborating with Uma Thurman’s Charley) could spell serious trouble as Season 2 unfolds.
