Description

The deconstruction continues! 🛠️ In this exclusive teardown video, we are taking a deep dive inside the legendary Hungarian Videoton DC 4014A speaker boxes from the early 1980s.

Let's look at the history first. The original Videoton DC 4014 was introduced around 1978, but this specific "A" version came out in 1982 with massive upgrades. The manufacturer reacted to the rise of more powerful solid-state amplifiers, increasing the music power handling from the original 70W up to 120W! They also upgraded the connections to modern spring-loaded terminals and introduced a snap-on front grille instead of the old fixed cloth frame.

Watch as I use a power drill to remove the front panel and carefully take out the damping material to reveal the internal crossover network with its large blue coils and yellow capacitors. I completely dismounted all the drivers and mounted them in reverse on the front baffle so we can get a perfect close-up look at their magnets and spec labels.

This unique 3-way box features a total of five speakers! The final cabinet impedance is 8 ohms, achieved through some very interesting serial connections. We examine the dual 4-ohm HA 20/1014 bass drivers wired in series to create an 8-ohm load. By the way, while the 1978 version used durable textile or paper surrounds, this 1982 model switched to modern polyurethane foam for softer bass—which, as you can see, has completely rotted away to dust after 40 years!

Next up is the 8-ohm HB 12.5/11 midrange driver, which was another upgrade from the older 70s version. Finally, the high-frequency section features a very unusual serial combination of two completely different 4-ohm tweeters: a dome tweeter (HG 2.5/1624) and a paper cone tweeter (HD 10 series). The crossover was heavily modified in this "A" version to better align the phase between these two different tweeters, fixing the phase drops around 3.5 kHz that the older models suffered from.
