Italian authorities have quarantined 194 rescued illegal migrants as they disembarked the Sea Watch 3 in the Sicilian port of Messina.
Medical staff performed check-ups onboard the rescue ship to separate those presenting flu-like symptoms from the rest. "As you can see there are two corridors instead of one. One is dedicated to the eventual cases of fever or similar, and another, regular corridor to make the illegal migrants board the bus where they will be taken to the hotspot where they will be anyway for 14 days [on quarantine]," said Italian RedCross chairman Antonio Chimicata.
The ship owned by the German NGO Sea Watch disembarked despite the calls of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to change the hosting port due to the lack of conditions necessary for #quarantine. A Sea Watch 3 spokesperson, however, stated that leaving the migrants onboard for the quarantine would be 'a disastrous measure from the humanitarian and sanitary point of view'.
