I’m so delighted to be finally sharing some music from Battle Suit Aces with you all! I’ve been working on this game alongside the team at Trinket Studios for about a year now, and it’s been such an incredible journey writing music for this story and universe. This is definitely the biggest game scoring project I’ve worked on, and I can’t wait for you all to hear all the music and be able to play the game in its entirety. For now though, we’ve just released a demo of Battle Suit Aces on Steam that anyone can play, so in addition to this song you can hear a whole bunch of other music I’ve written for the game in that demo!
Battle Suit Aces is a narrative deck builder game, where you lead your crew of Battle Suit pilots on a heartfelt journey through the stars as they search for fabled alien superweapons: the Relic Suits. The game is so much fun but honestly the marketing folks for the game can describe the game in much better words than I can - you can read that all on our Steam page!
In this video, though, I’m sharing the battle theme I wrote for one of the game’s factions - the Carrion Riders! The Carrion Riders are a space biker gang that cause trouble for the protagonist, and they needed a battle theme that gave off a groovy yet intimidating vibe. I leaned really heavily into some rock influences for this track, and it ended up featuring what I think is the most I’ve ever played distorted electric guitar on this channel, haha! I combined that with some bass, drums, clav, and synth parts, and ended up with this song that is so much fun to play. And if you’re thinking to yourself “this sound a bit like Snarky Puppy” I’ll be the first to admit, yes you’re right - Snarky Puppy is one of my favorite bands, and I’ve always thought that their sound could be really appropriate for a video game soundtrack in the right context… and I guess I found that context!
I’m really really happy with how the guitar parts turned out in this song, especially since guitar is not an instrument that I’ve spent a ton of time on, at least compared to my experience on piano and winds. I’ve played bass guitar for quite a while now, but playing lead / rhythm parts on guitar is something I’m a bit less experienced with. I used a couple of NeuralDSP amp sim plugins to get the guitar / bass tones that you hear in this song! The black guitar that you see me playing is my ESP guitar which I specifically got for doing more rock / metal kind of stuff, I think this is the first video that that guitar has shown up in! I also want to give a special shoutout to the guitar part that I played on my Stratocaster - given that the Carrion Riders are a space biker gang, I thought it would be fun to incorporate some motorcycle-inspired sounds into the track… so I decided to just YouTube search “how to make guitar sound like a motorcycle” and I found some REALLY cool tricks you can do with a super distorted guitar tone and a tremolo arm… which my Strat happens to have! So that’s what I’m doing in those video clips where it looks like I’m just kinda slapping the guitar and pulling the tremolo arm, because… that is what I’m doing haha.
I really hope you enjoyed this video! This song is just a taste of everything else on the Battle Suit Aces soundtrack. The whole soundtrack is definitely not like this, I’d say this song is more of an outlier, while the main tone of the soundtrack is more orchestral mixed with some sci-fi synth stuff. But all the music is super melodic, there are several recurring motifs throughout the soundtrack, and tons and tons of live instrumental performances done by me and some other fantastic collaborators! I hope to share more songs from this soundtrack with you when I’m able! Thanks again to Trinket for having me on board this project, and also sponsoring the creation of this YouTube performance video :D
