Carbon capture and storage in action | Yara Sluiskil

Description

The climate challenge is immense, and the timeline is short. As Yara CEO Svein Tore Holsether puts it: “We don’t have the luxury of choosing only one or two technologies.”

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a critical tool to fast-track decarbonization. By capturing CO₂ before it enters the atmosphere and storing it safely deep underground, CCS enables heavy industries to reduce emissions today and at scale.

At Yara’s flagship fertilizer and ammonia plant in Sluiskil, the Netherlands, we operate Europe’s largest industrial CCS project. Through our partnership with Northern Lights JV, up to 800,000 tons of liquefied CO₂ will be transported every year from Sluiskil to a secure storage site 2.6 km beneath the seabed on the Norwegian continental shelf.

Over the next 15 years, Yara Sluiskil is set to remove around 12 million tons of CO₂ from production, marking a major step forward for Yara and for Europe’s industrial decarbonization.
